Faro airport to expand

The new project for Faro airport aims to improve the service provided to the 6.7 million passengers expected in 2011 and the 8.5 million expected in 2020, with a response capacity for 30 aircraft per hour. In 2007, Faro International Airport handled 5.4 million passengers.

The project belonging to the firm ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal, which is licensed by the Ministry for Public Works, Transport and Communications, includes the building of taxiways and two rapid exits from the runway.

The terminal building is also to be expanded and remodelled to make it more modern and better suited to passenger service and a line of lights with defined spaces is to be installed on runway 10 to facilitate aircraft approach.

The non-technical abstract for the project, to which the news agency Lusa has had access, indicates that the work in question will encompass the civil parishes of Montenegro (Faro) and Almancil (Loulé) and is scheduled to take place between “April 2009 and July 2012”.

The Environmental Impact Study for the project took place between September 2006 and February 2007 and is under public consultation until Tuesday the 28th at Faro Municipal Council, the “Comissão de Coordenação e Desenvolvimento Regional do Algarve” (CCDR), and the “Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente” (APA) in Lisbon.
